Cyberpunk 2077’s has seen extensive expansions, Phantom Liberty has arrived, and fans are enjoying the opportunity to explore the iconic dystopian city and engage in its mysterious spy-thriller gameplay. Following its original launch in December 2020, the game has received much praise upon fans’ return to its gameplay, and some fans have found that they may purchase the expansion but still distance themselves from it.
The way they do this is through obvious narrative choices. Any player who purchases the Phantom Liberty expansion can prevent themselves from seeing the story to the end in Cyberpunk 2077 in two different ways.
Cyberpunk 2077 Fans Cut Themselves Out From Playing Phantom Liberty Content
Players have found that there are certain points where they find themselves prevented from progressing Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty story. There are two different examples, one more direct in comparison than the other. One of them is near the beginning of Phantom Liberty when the new President of the United States, Dogtown, gets into an accident. The moment when V decides not to pursue the ship is when the songbird is yelling in his ear to follow him. Ultimately, if V never decides to go after the crashed ship, the President dies, and the rest of his Phantom Liberty progress continues like this.
Another way to do this is to save the player president. They meet sleeper agent Solomon Reed, played by Idris Elba, in Dogtown and bring him to the President. There, Reed will ask V if it’s too much, and if it’s something they want to commit to in their Cyberpunk 2077 playthrough.

The player character may agree with Reed, indicating that this entire operation is way over their heads, and there is no way for them to get involved. The President may insist that he is needed for this, but not getting involved may cause the player character’s character to be doubled, and the player may fail the mission and leave the area freely. This doesn’t shut down Cyberpunk 2077, but it could be an interesting dialogue tree to see how Phantom Liberty ends in real time.
This is an exciting option that players can explore as per their liking, but purchasing it through Phantom Liberty does not mean missing out on any updates. For many Cyberpunk 2077 players, this brings back the joy of playing the game with Update 2.0, which changes the game significantly. This change is unprecedented, and I believe the update expands the scope of Phantom Liberty, turning it into a beautiful experience, which I discuss in more detail in my review.
